  • Prepare sets of the vocabulary words for pairs of students for the Word Sort activity.
  • Make copies of the Prefix Chart for all students.
LESSON PROCEDURE

Vocabulary

  1. Watch the Vocabulary movie to introduce the new words, stopping to ask questions, give examples, and ask students to make connections to the words.
  2. In pairs, have students do an Open Word Sort with the new vocabulary words. When they have finished, have them explain their categories to the rest of the class.
  3. Project the picture side of Flash Words onto the board or interactive white board. Students label the words they know and then flip the pictures to check if they are correct.

Grammar

  1. Watch the Grammar movie. After viewing the segment for each prefix (re-, pre-, sub-), brainstorm other words the students might know. You can make a web on the board, and/or group the words according to their parts of speech for students to see word family patterns.
  2. Have students choose one of the prefixes to illustrate words on a four-square page. To differentiate, you can suggest the words to illustrate. Students can look at the Know More of this lesson for more information. When they have finished, the class can guess the words that were illustrated.

Movie

  1. After the movie, have students turn to a partner and list the things that Ben bought when he went shopping. The pair that remembers the most correctly-stated items, wins.
  2. As students watch the movie, have them fill in the words they hear containing prefixes on the Prefix Chart. To differentiate, turn closed-captioning on or off. After the movie, discuss the words in each column, and the meaning of the prefixes. Challenge students to add more words they know, and to keep adding to the chart as they find new words. Remind students that prefixes can help them figure out the meaning of unknown words.

  3. Prefix Chart

  4. Leave the Prefix Chart on the board, or have students keep them out for reference. Have students help you create a game/test of prefixes and base words. Give each student 10 index cards to write the prefixes and base words, and time to create five matching words. They may also use the negative prefixes.

Features

  1. Watch Hear It, Say It. Students may listen and repeat sentences from the movie.
  2. Students do the remaining interactive features of the lesson: Play It, Warm Up, and You Can Do It.
Activities:
  • Watch the BrainPOP movie Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes for more information about the topic.
  • Make a Word Wall with words with prefixes, or have the students make posters.
  • Have students write analogies with the vocabulary words of any words with prefixes. For example:
Read is to preread as write is to ______________.
Comfortable is to uncomfortable as believable is to ________________.
  • For homework, have students prepare a mini presentation to the class about any word they want that contains a prefix. Their presentations must explain the words and how the prefixes create new meanings. The presentations can take any form: a story, skit, poem, drawing, cartoon, poster, etc.
